New Players Theatre, WC2N 6NG 26th March 2010 The Musical Comedy Awards returns for a second year after the success of the inaugural event last year, won by versatile Aussie-English duo Adams and Rea. After a series of heats held over the first couple of months of the year, the five finalists will come head to head at the New Players Theatre for this showpiece grand final, which will include performances by established musical comedians such as Tom Basden, Pippa Evans, Ginger & Black and the reigning champions Sarah Adams and Leisa Rea. The genre is in fine fettle, as exemplified by the successs of mainstream acts such as Flight of the Conchords (the self-proclaimed "formerly New Zealand's fourth-best folk parody duo"). Two of last year's finalists, chap-hop legend Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer and the twisted cabaret pop act Frisky & Mannish, have really broken through over the last year, the latter pair enjoying a sell-out show at Edinburgh followed by an international tour. Tonight's final is hosted by the founder of the dedicated 'Avin a Larf' musical comedy website, the affable Ed Chappel. For more details go to www.musicalcomedy.co.uk. The Scala, N1 9NL 27th March 2010 White Mischief, that neo-Victorian moveable feast of costume, dance, music and spectacle, celebrates its third birthday with a night of performance, pageantry and wild abandon at Scala. The crumbling rooms of the art deco-style former cinema play host to DJs, dancing, live music, craft stalls and bizarre installations in a night dedicated to "The Great Exhibition" and the grand fairs of yesteryear. Blending inspiration from Edwardian literature and the industrial and romantic science fiction from the Jules Verne era, White Mischief's parties are "more fun in one night than some venues can manage in a whole year" (The Guardian). Music comes from chap-hop luminaries MC Elemental and Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer (whose topics cover tea on the lawn, cricket, Surrey and good manners) as well as the lederhosen-loving Oompah Brass Band, plus an array of genres covering antique beat, classical, vintage jazz, swing and rock n roll. Live cabaret, burlesque, electrocution and balloon tricks are also on the cards. Dressing up is encouraged but not compulsory - but the more you put in, the more you'll get out of this wacky night of retro-futuristic alternate-history. For more information go to www.whitemischief.info. Competition: We have one pair of tickets to give away to the White Mischief 3rd Birthday Extravaganza on 27th March.
